Yamaha Silent Viola SVV-200
Yamaha's Silent Viola takes center stage!!
STOP with the viola jokes, already! Yamaha’s new amazing SVV-200 Silent Viola is nothing to joke about. In fact, Yamaha’s Silent Viola has a sexy presence, sleek curves, and sultry voice…no, I’m not describing a supermodel! Yamaha’s Silent Viola has both brains and beauty. Absolutely, no more viola jokes after you’ve seen and played this sleek acoustic/electric viola which is lightweight and perfect for violists of all ages who are serious about their music or who just love to have fun playing!
Designed for both professionals and students alike, this full-sized 16” scale viola is versatile—an intriguing blend of tradition and technology. Like its sister, Yamaha’s Silent Violin, it has all the advantages of an electric but with the added extra of the realistic feel and playability of an acoustic. Whether you use it for practice or for the stage, you’ll be sure to shine with this ultra modern viola!
The SVV-200 we tested came in a warm brown wood. The neck is maple, the body is spruce, the bridge is maple, and the fingerboard is ebony. Slightly different than its sister, the special black matte finish makes it easier to hold. It comes with an ebony tail piece/chin rest and you can add most standard chin and shoulder rests to it for comfort. Standard accessories include the earphones.
The test unit was viola only—your viola bow will work well with this instrument. A hard case is also available from Yamaha.
The dual pickup offers a wide range of possibilities—you can play from pianissimo to fortissimo with added flair.
It’s non-acoustic, so you can practice at all hours, without making enemies in the process. By using the headphones (just plug and play into the easy to reach headphone jack) be as loud as you wish at 3AM!
It can be used as a tool for practicing with your favorite band—the silent viola features an auxillary input, perfect for jamming with CDs.
For gigs, this viola is ideal—an input jack is located discreetly to the left of your chin rest, you wont be tripping over the cords with this viola!
The SVV-200 Silent Viola features an Equalizer Control that can both manage and isolate the upper partials of the harmonics produced while playing. With this feature, you can choose what kind of tone you’d like. Yamaha recommends a “6,” but the choice is yours! The Equalizer Switch has two modes: EQ Mode 1 (green light) and EQ Mode 2 (red light). The EQ Mode 1 delivers ideal and optimum tone produced from the viola, whereas the EQ Mode 2 uses the tone produced directly from the pickup, producing more of an uncolored tone.
Only weighing 1 lbs. 10 oz., this viola rivals the standard acoustic one- it has a continuous battery life from 12-24 hours (depending on your battery type), and uses a Stereo Piezo pick-up located underneath the bridge for higher quality performance.
A beautiful package, packed with brains and beauty. Why not take this baby out for a night on the town? You’ll definitely be heard with a Silent Viola on your shoulders, what are you waiting for?
